Pedestrian Safety Evaluation of Signalized Intersections Using Surrogate Safety Measures

Abstract: The large proportions of pedestrian fatalities led researchers to make the improvements of pedestrian safety at intersections. Thus, this paper proposes a methodology to evaluate crosswalk safety at signalized intersections using Surrogate Safety Measures (SSM) under mixed traffic conditions. The required pedestrian, traffic, and geometric data were extracted based on the videographic survey conducted at signalized intersections in Mumbai (India). Post Encroachment Time (PET) for each pedestrian were segregate… Show more

“…To do this, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed using data collected from various types of crossings in the Japanese city of Sapporo. [8] Study provides a methodology for assessing crossing safety at signalized intersections when there is mixed traffic, utilizing Surrogate Safety Measures (SSM). The results show that the suggested PET ranges and model are appropriate for mixed traffic circumstances in India.…”

“…The evaluation results indicated that the developed fuzzy C-means method can produce more accurate results and efficient threshold values for the pedestrian level of service score. Similarly, warrants for pedestrian crossing facilities in midblock segments were recommended through pedestrian-vehicle conflict analysis and videographic surveys, which enhance the design of efficient crossing facilities that address both pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow [10,11]. Ke et al developed a comprehensive index around environmental, economic, social, and transportation efficiency to deal with traffic-oriented development problems combined with the FAHP.…”
