Pediatric anesthesia training to early career stage: Opportunities for firm foundations

Abstract: Attaining professional contentment can be challenging for many. Academic success, psychosocial support, and the confidence to provide excellent clinical care at the workplace are key pillars that can help build a sense of meaning in a career. The role of mentorship in facilitating these key pillars at different stages of pediatric anesthesia training and new independent practice is instrumental.

“…Patient safety incidents, including near‐miss events, can have a “second victim” impact on clinicians, with potential consequences for their mental and physical well‐being 1 . Near‐miss events, for example hypoxemia due to laryngospasm or profound bradycardia during an inhalational induction, may occur more frequently with children, and thus pediatric anesthesiology residents may be particularly vulnerable 2 . The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of pediatric near‐miss perioperative events on residents and to quantify resident preferences for support options to guide future research and creation of a wellness program.…”

Offering professional development during fellowship training may be an ideal time to initiate this academic engagement and foster a career in academic medicine.…”

“…For this concept to work, faculty mentorship is critical to support interested fellows by assisting them with academic skills such as developing areas of expertise and honing presentation skills. 10,17,19 To help both junior faculty and fellows jumpstart their academic careers in pediatric anesthesia we created a professional development program called Visiting Scholars in Pediatric Anesthesia Program (ViSiPAP).…”
