Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Patterns of Practice and Outcomes in Japan and Europe

Abstract: Objectives: The Japan Cardiovascular Surgery Database–Congenital section (JCVSD-Congenital) and the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA) Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD) share the same nomenclature. We aimed at comparing congenital cardiac surgical patterns of practice and outcomes in Japan and Europe using the JCVSD-Congenital and ECHSA-CHSD. “…This tremendous progress made in pediatric cardiac intervention may have also resulted in a higher than anticipated mortality, as surgeons are left to deal with more complex procedures such as the transposition of great arteries, double outlet ventricles, and palliative surgeries. 8 The number of coronary artery disease surgeries continues to increase, probably due to earlier diagnoses of the disease in the general population and also probably due to the ever-expanding burden of disease within South Asia. The national center saw a ratio of almost 6 percutaneous coronary interventions to coronary surgery in 2021 with 2033 PCI to 364 coronary surgeries over the course of the year.…”

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been introduced beginning in colorectal surgery more that 2 decades ago and have shown to improve postoperative outcome while reducing length of hospital stay (LOS) [ 3 ].…”
