Pediatric Ototoxicity: Current Trends and Management

Abstract: Medical interventions to combat serious infection or malignancies carry significant morbidities, including ototoxicity. While these lifesaving drugs are often necessary to preserve life, the impact on quality of life for survivors is increasingly concerning for families and healthcare providers. Of primary importance for medical prescribers are appropriately sensitive ototoxicity grading scales and audiological monitoring protocols for surveillance for hearing loss. The intent of grading scales is to help comm… Show more

“…A recent study has reported that 80% of CDDP-treated patients (388 of 488) experience hearing loss of at least 20 dB, and 40% experience tinnitus [1]. The incidence of CDDP-induced ototoxicity in children ranges from 22 to 77% [2], among which 63%-77% of children experience permanent sensorineural hearing loss [3,4]. Children are at greater risk of CDDP-induced ototoxicity than adults, thus resulting in severe negative consequences in their neurocognitive ability and psychosocial development [5].…”

“…En la figura 2 se resumen los posibles resultados que pueden hallarse en los niños tratados con cisplatino. Los grados 0 a se pueden asignar en función de la gravedad de la hipoacusia y ninguno requiere evaluar más de tres frecuencias (Fligor, 2019).…”

“…According to clinical protocols and the recommendations of scientific societies, monitoring for early detection of ototoxicity allows treatment regimens to be changed and hence can minimize, or even prevent, ototoxicity leading to balance impairments and/or hearing loss (40,44,45). According to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), sensorineural degradation and auditory damage can lead to permanent hearing loss and tinnitus.…”
