Pediatric Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid: Case Report, Review of Literature and Novel Therapeutic Targets

Abstract: Salivary gland tumors are extremely rare and encompass a diverse group of histologies. Less than 5% of the affected population is pediatric. We present a case of 6-year-old child with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid. The patient underwent a superficial parotidectomy. Recurrence was not observed in the six months of follow-up. Surgery is the mainstay of the management of benign salivary gland tumors. Although novel molecular agents are being explored, personalized therapy would be a challenge due to the rari… Show more

“…The most frequent salivary gland tumor, pleomorphic adenoma, is sometimes referred to as a benign mixed tumor due to its dual genesis from myoepithelial and epithelial components [ 1 ]. It makes up two-thirds of all salivary gland tumors, making it the most prevalent [ 2 , 3 ]. Pleomorphic adenomas, the most common type of tumor, make up about 66% of all salivary gland neoplasms [ 4 ].…”

“…Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. It is also known as a benign mixed tumor (BMT), due to its dual origin from epithelial and myoepithelial elements (2,3,4). It represents 45-75% of all salivary gland tumors with an annual incidence of 2 to 3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.…”

“…Of the major salivary glands parotid is most commonly involved. [1][2][3] Although these are tumors of salivary glands, they also involve other areas of head and neck like auditory canal, eyelids etc. Occasionally involvement of lacrimal gland is also seen.…”
