Pediatric Scoliosis and Kyphosis: An Overview of Diagnosis, Management, and Surgical Treatment

Abstract: Evaluation of pediatric spinal deformity requires knowledge of special orthopaedic testing and radiographic interpretation. The determination of recommendations for treatment of spinal abnormalities in children can be challenging and at times complex, as treatment options are dependent upon a variety of factors. The etiology of scoliosis or kyphosis, presence or absence of vertebral anomalies, symptoms, magnitude of the curve, physiologic/skeletal age, and evidence of and risk of progression all require consid… Show more

“…Several studies have proved the effectiveness of conservative spinal orthoses on the modulation of the sagittal spinal curvature in flexible cases of kyphosis. They found that the correction of the kyphotic deviation was maintained as long as the braces or orthoses were used [24][25][26]. Another study recommended that TheraTogs orthotic undergarment and its strapping system might be a beneficial intervention for improving spinal sagittal geometry in children with diplegic cerebral palsy [27].…”

“…with scoliosis) is mainly based on radiographic examination. 13 On the other hand, an X-ray examination in children should be performed only for a valid medical reason and with minimal radiation dose, which is necessary to achieve a diagnostic high quality result. 14 Moreover, it should be performed in accordance with the American College of Radiology and the Society for Pediatric Radiology Practice Parameter for General Radiography.…”

“…A rotational deformity known as a rib hump can be easily identified. 32,33 Congenital lower extremity diseases that can cause the same disruption to normal height were excluded too. Stunting and severe stunting children were excluded to avoid the influence of abnormal height on the equations.…”
