“…It is thus likely that Guangxi, and possibly Fujian, have been neglected as melioidosis-endemic, and improvements in awareness and diagnosis of the disease are needed to improve the understanding of its true prevalence in these provinces. In general, the range of clinical manifestations of melioidosis in China is similar to that seen elsewhere, with relatively rare clinical manifestations reported in the literature, including suppurative parotitis (one case) [43], osteomyelitis (three cases) [44] and pericarditis (one case) [45] from Hainan, as well as prostatic abscesses (two cases) [46] and co-infection with Japanese encephalitis (one case) [47] from Guangdong.…”

“…As a facultative intracellular pathogen, it is the etiologic agent of melioidosis, nicknamed the "Vietnamese time bomb" as a result of American soldiers developing infections, sometimes many years after exposure to contaminated dust aerosolized by the helicopter rotor blades, or "the great mimicker" [1,2]. Melioidosis has a broad range of clinical manifestations, including pediatric suppurative parotitis, osteomyelitis, or meningoencephalitis, although the most frequent manifestation is pneumonia, either acute with sepsis or chronic, the latter which may be initially misdiagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis due to similar signs and radiological appearances [3,4]. Acute forms have high mortality in some countries of Southeast Asia, which is strongly related to poverty.…”

“…Острый гнойный паротит часто встречается у детей в Юго-Восточной Азии, причем при отсутствии явных факторов риска, редко встречается у взрослых и ограничивается единичными случаями в Австралии. Мелиоидозный паротит может быть осложнен образованием абсцессов, разрывом слухового канала, параличом лицевого нерва и некротическим фасциитом, остео миелитом с септическим артритом и сепсисом [28,30,40].…”
