Pediatrician Identification of Latino Children at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THIS SUBJECT: Latino children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) less often and later than white children. Primary care pediatricians (PCPs) may play an important role in early ASD identification for Latinos. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS:PCPs find it more difficult to assess for ASDs in Latinos with Spanish primary language, view Latino parents as less knowledgeable about ASDs, and experience frequent barriers to ASD diagnosis in Latino patients. Many PCPs do not offer recommended scre… Show more

“…[7] However, despite the existence of these tools, physicians find it hard to integrate these processes along with anticipatory guidance and other competing guidelines for routine surveillance and screening into the high volume and clinical flow of outpatient pediatric practice [8,9]. While these efforts have been increasing since clinical care guidelines were published in 2001 and 2007 and scientific discoveries have accelerated what is known about ASDs, [5,6] the rate of autism screening among community physicians has remained relatively unchanged over the last 5 years [10,11].…”

“…This is problematic since awareness and concepts about "illness" vary between cultures, geographical regions, or even within regions [6,7]. An ASD survey in two USA states [78,81] showed practitioners more often misidentified or identified later ASD in CLD children than in mainstream white children. Researchers advocate examining children for ASD within their cultural context as social cultural factors impact on ASD expression [8,9,82].…”

“…The narratives would also serve the ASD research communities as they would help in tracking these children's developmental trajectories in real time. This would facilitate identifying ASD profiles, provide the impetus to the development of tools appropriate for language and culture for the identification of ASD in boys and girls in the diverse regions or populations [79,81], and assist in pairing specific profiles with the "best" treatment to meet children's particular needs.…”
