Pediococcus acidilactici Promotes the Longevity of C. elegans by Regulating the Insulin/IGF-1 and JNK/MAPK Signaling, Fat Accumulation and Chloride Ion

Abstract: Probiotics are known to contribute to the anti-oxidation, immunoregulation, and aging delay. Here, we investigated the extension of lifespan by fermented pickles-origin Pediococcus acidilactici (PA) in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), and found that PA promoted a significantly extended longevity of wild-type C. elegans. The further results revealed that PA regulated the longevity via promoting the insulin/IGF-1 signaling, JNK/MAPK signaling but not TOR signaling in C. elegans, and that PA reduced the react… Show more

“…55 Besides, Pediococcus acidilactici also up-regulated the sod-3, fat-4 and ltpl-4 genes in C. elegans to reduce the ROS level and lipid disposition to extend lifespan. 56 These research findings are consistent with the up-regulation of sod-3 in the wild-type KD group in this work. In the daf-2 mutant, due to the defect of the daf-2 gene and patulin exposure, genes daf-16, sod-3 and skn-1 declined in the KD group.…”

“… 31 For C. elegans , several studies have investigated the role of chosen specific bacterial strains (or consortia) – frequently lactic acid bacteria, on lifespan, fat metabolism, or metabolic pathways involved in energy metabolism regulation. 32 , 33 The worm has also been extensively used in the field of host-pathogen interaction, triggering the regulation of innate immunity 34 as well as a cascade of a wide variety of genes. 35 Similarly, Drosophila has been extensively used as a model to study the phenomenology and the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of microbiota-diet interactions and their influence on host biology including postnatal development (ie juvenile growth and maturation), adult physiology (ie immune and metabolic functions and behavior) and aging.…”
