Pedobacter schmidteae sp. nov., a new bacterium isolated from the microbiota of the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea

Abstract: Pedobacter schmidteae sp. nov. strain EGT (Collection de Souches de l’Unité des Rickettsie CSUR P6417 = Colección Española de Cultivos Tipo CECT 9771) is a new Pedobacter species isolated from the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea. Schmidtea mediterranea are flatworms living in freshwater and exhibiting an unusual ability to regenerate amputated parts. To date, the gut microbiota of Schmidtea mediterranea remains poorly studied. Here, via the culturomics strategy that consists in using diversified culture condi… Show more

“…While, recently, we have already published the identification of Pedobacter schmidteae sp. nov., as a novel bacterium isolated from this microbiota [73], here, we report the identification of a second novel bacteria species, which belongs to Metabacillus genus called Metabacillus schmidteae sp. nov.…”

“…The data of chemotaxonomic and biochemical analysis could be used as a protein or biochemical marker to identify the genus metabacillus. Metabacillus schmidteae is now the second bacteria newly identified in planarian microbiota [73]. Its contribution in regeneration, as well as the antimicrobial capacity of the planarian, remains to be investigated.…”

“…Two primers [27F and 1492R] and six primers [27F, 1492R, 530F (5′-GTGCCAGCMGCCGCGG-3′), 907R (5′-CCGTCAATTCMTTTRAGTTT-3′), 1110F (5′-GCAACGAGCGCAACCC-3′), and 520R (5′-ACCGCGGCKGCTGGC-3′) [ 31 , 32 ] were used in the sequencing of isolates CGC-5 and TCM1-050, respectively. The gene sequences obtained were edited and configured as a contiguous consensus by CodonCode [ 33 ]. The completed gene sequences were compared to other publicly available gene sequences in EzBioCloud ( , accessed on 7 August 2021) and GenBank–NCBI BLAST ® ( , accessed on 7 August 2021) databases.…”

“…The genus Comamonas , assigned to the family Comamonadaceae ( Betaproteobacteria ), was originally named by Davis and Park ( 1 ) in 1962 but was validly published only in 1985, with Comamonas terrigena as the type species ( 2 ). We isolated a bacterial strain, LK (= CSUR P6418 = CECT 9772), from the planarian species Schmidtea mediterranea using a previously published method ( 3 ). This strain exhibited 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 100% to Comamonas aquatilis strain SB30-Cr27-3 T (= CIP 111491 T = CCM 8815 T ); the latter was isolated from a garden pond ( 4 ).…”
