Peer Recruitment Strategies for Female Sex Workers Not Engaged in HIV Prevention and Treatment Services in Côte d’Ivoire: Program Data Analysis

Abstract: Background In the context of the mostly generalized HIV epidemic in Côte d’Ivoire, key populations bear a higher burden of HIV than that borne by the general reproductive-aged population. Mathematical models have demonstrated the significant potential impact and cost-effectiveness of improving the coverage of HIV prevention and treatment services for key populations in Côte d’Ivoire. However, in 2019, coverage of these services remained limited by multiple intersecting stigmas affecting key populat… Show more

“…One RCT enrolled FSW and was randomised at the community level [17] and the other two randomized at the level of care delivery sites studied FSW [18] and MSM [19]. The other nine studies were observational studies, including five prospective studies, two retrospective studies, one report showing a retrospective data analysis, and a survey [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Six observational studies targeted FSW.…”

“…Home-based ART services were provided by the mobile health team in Tanzanian study [21]. Four studies, conducted in Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, implemented DIC and mobile ART or outreaches for HIV testing services and/or ART initiation or refill [21][22][23][24]. In two studies, a mobile health team, comprising of clinicians, nurses and peer educators, were engaged to provide ART services through community-based HIV testing and counselling (CBHTC) and ART [21,22].…”

“…For example, the enhanced peer outreach approach that targeted key populations including FSWs in Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi, successfully identified and offered HIV testing to the hard-to-reach FSWs. This approach led to an increase in diagnoses of new HIV infection among FSWs, and improved linkage to care and treatment (29, 30).…”

“…For example, the enhanced peer outreach approach that targeted key populations including FSWs in Cote d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi, successfully identified and offered HIV testing to the hard-to-reach FSWs. This approach led to an increase in diagnoses of new HIV infection among FSWs, and improved linkage to care and treatment (29,30). Although studies in sub Saharan Africa and in particular Uganda (22,23) have studied uptake of HIV testing, the majority have focused at examining the history of ever tested, and how proximate the tests were (18,21,24,26,31).…”
