Penetrating the Oxide Barrier in Situ and Separating Freestanding Porous Anodic Alumina Films in One Step

Abstract: A simple method for penetrating the barrier layer of an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film and for detaching the AAO film from residual Al foil was developed by reversing the bias voltage in situ after the anodization process is completed. With this technique, we have been able to obtain large pieces of free-standing AAO membranes with regular pore sizes of sub-10 nm. By combining Ar ion milling and wetting enhancement processes, Au nanowires were grown in the sub-10 nm pores of the AAO films. Further scaling do… Show more

“…As a result, AAOCNTs with outer diameters ranging from 20 to 200 nm can be easily prepared [46,47,[79][80][81]. AAO film with channel size smaller than 20 nm can also be synthesized by selecting low voltage or in dilute sulfuric acid at low temperature (near 0°C) [76,82]. SEM images of the AAO-CNTs with outer diameters of 100, 30, and 10 nm are shown in Figure 5.…”

“…Very recently, Mallouk and coworkers (20) proposed a new method to penetrate and detach the barrier layer by applying a reverse bias voltage (Ϫ3.5 to Ϫ5V) immediately after the completion of the anodization; both anodization and reverse bias are carried out in the same 3% H 2 SO 4 solution. When H 2 bubbles are observed, the bias voltage is reduced until no more bubbles are detected; the process takes a few minutes.…”

“…When H 2 bubbles are observed, the bias voltage is reduced until no more bubbles are detected; the process takes a few minutes. It was postulated (20) that the application of a reverse bias voltage in acidic solution results in an increase of the local H ϩ concentration, thus promoting the dissolution of the oxide barrier layer by the following reaction:…”

“…Regardless of the irregularity of the arrays formed with the "branched" side of the AAO membrane and the polycarbonate membrane, these experiments suggest that this evaporation technique is capable of replicating templates of almost arbitrarily small dimensions, shape, and composition (including AAO membranes with regular, cylindrical pores as small as 20 nm, which are not commercially available but have been produced using established anodization methods). 3,[27][28][29][30][31] Control of the Heights of the Nanotubes. The heights of the structures depended on the angle of evaporation (␣, the angle between the axis of rotation and a line between the www.acsnano.org source and the AAO membrane).…”
