“…Similar results were obtained with equine spermatozoa and bovine or hamster zona-free oocytes, with bovine spermatozoa and equine or porcine zona-free oocytes, and with rat spermatozoa and porcine zona-free oocytes [62][63][64][65]. Sartini and Berger [16] suggest that ligand-receptor conservation mediates the spermatozoa-oolemma binding between porcine and bovine species.…”

“…It has been reported that the treatment of spermatozoa with caffeine results in increased in vitro penetration rates of bovine (Niwa & Ohgoda 1988) and porcine (Wang et al 1991, Zhao et al 2002 oocytes, and also results in a higher proportion of fertilisation (Parrish et al 1986, Niwa & Ohgoda 1988. However, the incidence of sperm penetration was either low or nil in mTBM medium without caffeine (Abeydeera & Day 1997b, Zhao et al 2002. ANP had a similar effect on the proportion of oocytes penetrated and fertilisation as that of caffeine, suggesting that ANP may play a physiological role in fertilisation.…”

“…Therefore, locally produced ANP may play an important role in mammalian sperm function. Although some agonists (such as caffeine and heparin) are widely used for spermatozoa capacitation and IVF in domestic animals (Parrish et al 1986, Niwa & Ohgoda 1988, Abeydeera & Day 1997b, Zhao et al 2002, the mechanisms of fertilisation in vivo are unclear. In the present study, we analyzed ANP and natriuretic peptide receptors gene expression in pig sperm and oviduct.…”

“…In horses, conventional methods of semen quality evaluation, such as sperm motility, morphology, viability and concentration, are routinely used to rapidly estimate reproductive potential, but the results obtained do not correlate well with the final fertility rates achieved (Amann and Hammerstedt, 2002;Kuisma et al, 2006;Love, 2011;Rodríguez-Martínez, 2003). A better alternative is to examine the capacity of spermatozoa to penetrate homologous or heterologous oocytes in vitro (Cox et al, 1994;García-Álvarez et al, 2009;Macedo et al, 2006Macedo et al, , 2010Slavík and Fulka, 1992;Zhao et al, 2002). This has provided excellent results in donkeys (Taberner et al, 2010).…”
