“…Semen was evaluated for volume, pH, and sperm quality. I n vitro sperm penetration test into precollected cervical mucus was performed using the scale of 1 to 4 (for poor to excellent), as described elsewhere (Bergman et al, 1981). The degree of motility was graded from 1 (poor) to 4 (excellent) forward motility.…”

“…In this analysis any variation due to mucus quality was eliminated by using a cryostored pool of bovine cervical mucus, since this material has been shown to reflect accurately the interaction of human spermatozoa and human mucus(Bergman, Amit, David, Homonnai & Paz, 1981;Mangione, Medley & Menge, 1981), exhibiting correlation coefficients of 0-982 and 0-931 in independent studies(Bergman et ai, 1981 ; R. J. Aitken, unpublished observations). In terms of the measurement of cervical mucus penetration, multiple regression equations incorporating the PSC scores as the dependent variable gave a poorer correlation with sperm movement than did Cm or Cm/Cs.…”

“…The limiting factor of the performance of the in vitro penetration test is the availability of suitable mucus, especially in the cross-penetration tests. One solution to this prob lem was given by Bergman et al [1] who used bovine cervical mucus as a reference mucus. The characteristics of bovine and human cervical mucus were shown to be similar [4,11], The PV obtained in both the bovine mucus and human mucus were similar [ 1 ].…”

The characteristics of bovine and human cervical mucus were shown to be similar [4,11], The PV obtained in both the bovine mucus and human mucus were similar [ 1 ]. Another solution to the problem is the development of a method to store the human cervical mucus.…”
