Penning trap mass measurements on nobelium isotopes

Abstract: The Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP at GSI Darmstadt allows accurate mass measurements of radionuclides, produced in fusion-evaporation reactions and separated by the velocity filter SHIP from the primary beam. Recently, the masses of the three nobelium isotopes 252-254No were determined. These are the first direct mass measurements of transuranium elements, which provide new anchor points in this region. The heavy nuclides were produced in cold-fusion reactions by irradiating a PbS target with a 48Ca … Show more

“…A breakthrough was the measurement of the nobelium (Z = 102) isotopes 252,253,254 No produced with cross sections of 2 µb (≈ 2 ions/s), 1 µb (≈ 1 ion/s) and 0.5 µb (≈ 0.5 ions/s), respectively, performed by the SHIPTRAP Collaboration at the heavy ion accelerator UNILAC and the velocity filter SHIP at GSI in Darmstadt, [8]. The mass uncertainties range from 13 keV for 253 No to 31 keV for 252 No [9]. These results represent the very first direct mass measurement above uranium and improve the knowledge of many masses of neighboring isotopes up to darmstadtium (Z = 110) due to a manifold of links.…”

“…Faster cooling time can be achieved if the ion under study has a higher charge state. Table 1 Time for cooling and/or energy exchange (t ex ) for different ion pairs calculated according to (9). z 0 = 0.5 mm, C = 1 pF, and ν z = 100 kHz.…”

“…EVRs extracted from the cell are bunched and injected into a first Penning trap, which provides isobaric separation, and then into a second Penning trap, in which the mass is determined with a precision of the order of 10 −7 by measuring the ion's cyclotron frequency, which is directly related to its mass. The recent measurements of 252−254 No [102,103] represent the first direct mass measurements beyond uranium and pave the way for studies into the region of the SHE. A cyclotron resonance as obtained in these studies for 254 No is displayed in Fig.…”

“…It consists of a gas-filled stopping cell for stopping of the high energetic reaction products separated by SHIP, an RFQ cooler and buncher for cooling and accumulating the ions, and a double Penning trap system for high-precision mass measurements. The length of the apparatus from the gas cell to the channeltron detector is 4.5 m. The figure was taken from [30].…”

“…An example of such devices is the SHIPTRAP setup consisting of a gas-filled stopping cell, a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) cooler and buncher, and a double Penning trap system [27][28][29][30]. The set-up is shown in Fig.…”
