Pennsylvania's Forests, 2009

Abstract: The second full annual inventory of Pennsylvania's forests reports a stable base of 16.7 million acres of forest land. Northern hardwoods and mixed-oak forest-type groups account for 54 and 32 percent of the forest land, respectively. The State's forest land averages about 61 dry tons of wood per acre and almost 6,500 board feet (International ¼-inch rule) per acre on timberland. The ratio of average annual net growth-to-removals for growing-stock trees on timberland was about 2:1. Additional information is pr… Show more

“…The soils of the Poconos region are largely undeveloped inceptisols that are thin, acidic, and have even been described as "inhospitable to plant growth" (Oplinger and Halma 2006:14). Such soils are thus of little use to agriculture (White and Chance 1882) and the region is now almost completely forested with minimal contemporary agricultural influence (McCaskill et al 2009). This forested landscape, although managed in part for timber production, remains dominated by mature mixed-oak and northern hardwood forests (80-110 yr), woody wetlands, and suburban areas scattered throughout (McCaskill et al 2009).…”

“…Aspen, pine, oak, elm/ash/cottonwood, and spruce/fir are the dominant forest types in MN where nearly two-thirds of the growing stock are hardwoods, and the rest are softwoods. Mixed-oak, northern hardwoods and loblolly/pitch/shortleaf pine forest-type groups dominate the PANJ site where hardwoods are largely distributed to the northern areas and softwoods are concentrated primarily in the south [41,42]. Loblolly-shortleaf pine, oak-hickory and oak-gum-cypress are the dominant forest-type groups in SC where a large part of the forest is young and naturally regenerated [43].…”

“…For example, the cycle of plots measured from 2009 through 2014 are collectively labeled the 2014 inventory and were used to produce this 2014 report. The 2004 inventory was the first annual inventory to include the complete cycle of annual inventory plots (McWilliams et al 2007) and the 2009 inventory was the first annual inventory to include a complete remeasurement of plots (McCaskill et al 2013). This report for 2014 encompasses the second complete remeasurement of plots.…”
