Pentagastrin and gastric mucosal blood flow

Abstract: The effect of pentagastrin on mucosal microcirculation was studied in rats by use of intravital microscopy. The superficial mucosal vessels were videorecorded for off-line analysis of red cell velocities (VRBC) and vessel diameters, from which blood flow (QRBC) was calculated. Resting mucosal blood flow calculated from single microvascular flow data, and vessel distribution was 40 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1. Pentagastrin infused intravenously in a dose of 20 micrograms X kg-1 X h-1 resulted in submaximal acid secret… Show more

“…The nature of the Doppler shift from an illuminated tissue depends on the velocity and number of moving red blood cells (31). The accuracy of the LaserDoppler flowmetry technique for gastrointestinal applications was described earlier (32,33). The laser probe was fixed to a micromanipulator and kept at a distance of 0.5-1 mm from the gastric mucosa in the chamber solution.…”

“…The blood flow was recorded continuously from the mucosal side of the gastric mucosa, with a probe fixed to a micromanipulator and kept at a distance of 0.5-1 mm above the surface of the mucosa, in the solution. This technique for measuring the gastric mucosal blood flow with laser-Doppler flowmetry has been well evaluated previously (25,29).…”

“…Laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) was used for blood flow measurements as described earlier (21). The flowmeter (Periflux model Pf 4001; Perimed, Stockholm, Sweden) was connected to a computer and MacLab data-sampling unit (ADInstruments).…”

“…Blood flow was monitored continuously throughout the experiment. Evaluation of the accuracy of the LDF technique in measuring gastrointestinal blood flow was performed in earlier studies (1,21,28).…”
