People’s perception on agricultural vulnerabilities to climate change and SLR in Bangladesh: adaptation strategies and explanatory variables

Abstract: The objective of this research is to evaluate people’s perception on vulnerabilities of agriculture and to explore effective adaptation options with identifying the underlying demographic, socio-economic and other relevant variables that influence the adaptation strategies in the sea level rise (SLR) hazard induced coastal areas of Bangladesh. The study finds that climate change and induced SLR are emerging threats to coastal agriculture of Bangladesh; hence, farmers are applying different adaptation strategie… Show more

“…Most of these adaptation strategies were adopted for autonomous and reactive reasons and were later supported by different NGOs and government organizations. Support from these institutions for different adaptation strategies is visible in other studies (Islam and Paul 2018), though farmers mostly adopt adaptation options autonomously (Alam et al 2017;Klenk et al 2017;Amin et al 2018).…”

“…Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, a Pearson chi-square test was used to assess whether there was a statistically significant relationship between socioeconomic status and the decision-making process of adaptation to climatic change, and the choice of adaptation strategies. The Pearson chi-square test has been widely used in the field of climate change adaptation to analyze the statistical association between variables (Islam and Paul 2018;Prabhakar 2013;Limantol et al 2016;Korir 2019;Maharjan et al 2020). In this study, we used the Pearson chi-square test to investigate the relationship between the socio-economic conditions of the farmers and their choice of adaptation strategies (e.g., the ways that a farmer's farming status or education affected their introduction of new crops into the field or their rainwater harvesting).…”
