Peptic Ulcer Bleeding Risk. The Role of Helicobacter Pylori Infection in NSAID/Low-Dose Aspirin Users

Abstract: NSAID, low-dose ASA use, and H. pylori infection are three independent risk factors for the development of PUB, but there were differences in the interaction effect between low-dose ASA (no interaction) or NSAID (addition) use and H. pylori infection, which may have implications for clinical practice in prevention strategies.

“…A meta-analysis showed that NSAIDs use increases the risk of peptic ulcer in H. pylori -infected patients 45. A recent epidemiological study has shown that H. pylori infection and NSAIDs use have additive effects on the risk of peptic ulcer bleeding 46. Another meta-analysis47 of five randomised clinical trials and additional studies reported more recently48 have shown that H. pylori eradication is associated with a reduced incidence of peptic ulcer in new users but not in chronic users.…”

“…We were not able to explore the role of Helicobacter pylori infection [17,30] or higher doses of NSAIDs [2,31] and multiple NSAID use [28], which are recognised causes of NSAID-associated GI complications as this information was not available for all patients in this study.…”
