Peptide Signaling in Plant Development

Abstract: Cell-to-cell communication is integral to the evolution of multicellularity. In plant development, peptide signals relay information coordinating cell proliferation and differentiation. These peptides are often encoded by gene families and bind to corresponding families of receptors. The precise spatiotemporal expression of signals and their cognate receptors underlies developmental patterning, and expressional and biochemical changes over evolutionary time have likely contributed to the refinement and complex… Show more

“…Although much emphasis has traditionally been placed on the roles of hormone signalling in root development, there are also many non-hormonal signalling pathways involved, such as peptide signalling [34,92,93].…”

“…We screened out the SSGs and GSGs expressed merely at the larva and adult stages to examine their presumed protein functions using InterProScan 5. The resulting analysis showing that signal-peptide domains prevail among SSGs and GSGs indicates that these LSGs may be of great importance in cell differentiation, as signal peptides have central roles in development [30]. InterProScan results for the predicted functions are provided in Additional File 5.…”

“…As a result, the contribution of small open reading frames (sORF) to the development and response to abiotic and biotic stresses has not been investigated in much detail. 9,10 Greater than 8,000 sORFs have been reported in Arabidopsis 11,12 and many of these have been reported to be associated with morphogenesis. 12 Although some of the sORFs are present as antisense to the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative (AGI)-annotated genes (4.78%), the majority of these sORFs lie in intergenic regions.…”

“…Although the exact function of the peptides putatively encoded by these sORFs remains unclear, it is plausible that some are involved in root to shoot signaling in response to drought stress. Cell-to-cell and root-to-shoot signaling is extremely important in plants and both function to regulate developmental changes 10 and the response to abiotic stresses. Secreted peptides are reported to play an important role in cell-to-cell communication and are believed to coordinate and specify cellular functions in plants during development and the response to environmental stresses.…”
