Perceived effort of funtional activities after a period of mechanical ventilation

Abstract: A case report to assess exercise testing post-mechanical ventilation, using functional activities while monitoring changes in the physiological parameters and subjective rating of perceived exertion.  The case report subject was able to use the Modified Borg Scale to report  her perception of perceived exertion during functional exercise testing.  An increase in heart rate, respiratory rate and Modified Borg Scale rating was noted on progression through the exercise test.  Difficulty was experienced with subje… Show more

“…A study carried out by Grant et al ( 1999 ) tested a group of active male volunteers to determine which of the subjective scales, the Likert Scale, the visual analogue scale or the MBS, were more sensitive to change and reproducible in the assessment of general fatigue and breathlessness during sub-maximal exercise. In general, the MBS proved to be the most sensitive in assessing change (Roos & Eales 2002 ). To determine participants’ severity post-stroke, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) was used in our study.…”

“…In other words, PSCs are the sacrifice or the punishment that customers must incur (Jones and Taylor 2007 ). Since switching is a dynamic process the extends from the termination of existing costs and benefits to the acceptance of new providers, the relevant costs include all costs that customers face from the beginning of the provider switching decision to the final execution (Roos et al 2002 ). In previous research, clarity and consensus on the uni-dimensional or multi-dimensional structural characteristics of PSCs have been lacking.…”

“…The MBS is noted to be a reliable and valid tool for assessing subjective perceived effort (Noble et al, 1983, Neely et al, 1992, AACVPR, 1999. This specific instrument was used in case studies in mechanically ventilated patients (Jacavone and Young, 1998;Lush et al, 1998) and in the period after prolonged ventilation (Roos et al, 2002) with good results.…”
