Perceived impacts of climate change on rural poultry production: a case study in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Abstract: Rural farming households in developing countries frequently contend with multiple challenges, including a lack of resources, food insecurity, and poverty. Climate change threatens to compound existing challenges, particularly in such rural subsistence economies with limited adaptive capacity. We aim to establish farmers' perspectives on likely impacts of climate change on their rural poultry production in northern South Africa. A baseline questionnaire-based study was conducted across 106 households in the tow… Show more

“…Therefore, farmers in Zou need to improve turkey housing to be able to separate them from other species and reduce the liberty of the birds as recommended by these authors (Conan et al, 2012). The improved housing in Zou would also provide more protection for the birds as traditional housing does not provide enough protection and exposes them to the weather (high wind and rain) and predators (Nyoni et al, 2019;Nyoni et al, 2021;Desta, 2021). This exposure is expressed in the high mortalities observed by farmers in younger and more fragile animals (Otte et al, 2021).…”

“…Poultry producers are faced with a plethora of challenges related to the health, nutrition, and predation of their flocks. This has been exacerbated by the increase in ambient temperatures in communities where indigenous chickens are kept (Mapiye et al, 2008;Nyoni et al, 2022). Indigenous chickens have been exposed to unfavourable environmental conditions for centuries, which has resulted in their developing traits to cope with these harsh conditions, which include food scarcity (Köhler-Rollefson, 2004).…”

“…In rural areas of developing countries, indigenous chickens (also called village chickens), which are mostly kept as free-range chicken, are a major part of the diversified livelihoods away from crop agriculture ( Alemayehu et al., 2018 ). Indigenous chickens are valuable assets that have been found to be more resilient to the immediate effect of climate change as they do not depend on pasture, have low water, and feed needs ( Gerbens-Leenes et al., 2013 ; Nyoni et al., 2021 ). Phiri et al.…”
