Perceived male partner attitudes toward the female condom predict female university students’ use of the female condom

Abstract: Female and male condoms are the only methods that prevent both sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and unintended pregnancy. Despite continuing high STI rates, few studies investigate factors predicting whether women initiating female condom (FC) use sustain use. Using data from a randomized trial, we examined predictors of sustained FC use at five-month follow-up (FU2) among female university students in South Africa who participated in either a one-session, information-only, group… Show more

“…However, the findings of this study differ from those found by Mantell et al [36] in their randomized trial design on the perceived male partner attitude toward the female condom in South Africa, which indicated that young especially male partners perceived female condoms positively as male condoms. However, the attributable factors to the mismatch are probably differences in the methodological approaches including study designs, timing, and populations.…”

“…These students may find it very difficult to use the FC during sexual intercourse to prevent HIV transmission. Discussing FC use with partner and believing one's partner holds positive attitudes toward the FC can also affect its use during sexual intercourse 20 . In South Africa, at the end of an intervention on FC, some women still failed to convince male partners to use the FC, often due to its physical attributes or partners' lack of knowledge about insertion 24 .…”

“…Findings about sexual satisfaction ranged from not detecting the method during sex (e.g., the diaphragm, vaginal ring) to feeling like the method enhanced the sexual experience (e.g., using a female instead of a male condom) (POW PDP 2015; Mathenjwa and Maharaj 2012;Van Dijk et al 2013;Beksinska et al 2019;Bowling et al 2018;Minnis et al 2018;Bharadwaj 2015;Pandit et al 2014;Sahin-Hodoglugil et al 2011;. According to the literature, partners' supportive attitudes toward a method also contributed to women's method continuation (Somesh Kumar et al 2014;Bryant et al 2015;Pandit et al 2014;Wanyenze et al 2011;Soni, Garg, and Bangar 2013;Malik et al 2014;Mantell et al 2020).…”
