To identify the evidence from the literature regarding empowerment strategies for type 2 diabetes (T2D) self-care through a systematic literature review. PRISMA method, the review was in PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, CINAHL, LILACS, Web of Science, Springer, Redalyc and Sciencedirect were applied, using randomized controlled trials published since 2015 in Spanish, English and Portuguese, with at least one empowerment strategy, analyzed by four independent researchers. 2370 studies were found, 16 met the criteria. They used educational and psychosocial strategies, motivational interviewing and participatory action, discussions, images, questions, illustrations, worksheets, books, experiences, counseling, phone calls, debates, home visits, physical exercise, medication, action plans, decision making, glycemic control, uncertainty management, and nutrition. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was extracted to assess the effectiveness of the strategies. 87.5% were delivered by nurses, 50% in a clinical setting, 68.7% were carried out with groups; the empowerment process model was the most used as a theoretical foundation. Empowerment strategies for T2D self-care were effective, mainly those implemented by nurses showed improvements in HbA1c. It is recommended to support the implementation of intervention programs that empower people with T2D to perform self-care.
