Dental education is widely regarded as a demanding experience. Information about the stress sources and their degree is crucial since it will aid in the development of appropriate interventional methods for the student's overall development. Thus, our study was aimed at assessing the different forms of stress that affect Postgraduate dentistry students, as well as their attitudes toward psychiatric therapies. The study was conducted on 93 postgraduate dental students at a dental institution in Mysuru, India, using a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey format. The information gathered was statistically examined. The mean and standard deviation were used in the quantitative analysis. The mean of all stressor scores was compared between groups using an independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA. The Chi-square test was employed to examine qualitative data. The overall stress level among postgraduate dental students was high. All the year students demonstrated a similar trend with a high level of academic stress followed by health-related and psychosocial stress. The academic stress increased as the year of study progressed. We discovered no differences in stress perception between male and female students. In addition, a notable proportion of the participants had a favourable attitude toward psychiatric therapy. Stress levels among postgraduate dental students were found to be high in our study. This indicates a need for upgrading the current postgraduate dental educational system to be less stressful. Introduction Dental profession is one of the most stressful healthcare occupations. Paediatric dental postgraduates face multifaceted challenges in their everyday practice. This study aimed to determine the sources of stress amongst paediatric dental postgraduate students in India using a mixed‐method approach. Materials and Methods A sequential mixed‐methods approach was employed. In the quantitative phase, a cross‐sectional web‐based questionnaire survey was conducted amongst paediatric dental postgraduates in India using the “Google Forms application” link. Based on the Dental Environment Stress (DES) questionnaire, the stress PACT questionnaire which includes 35 items was framed and validated. This validated questionnaire was used in the survey. In the qualitative phase, one‐on‐one, semi‐structured telephone interviews were conducted amongst 12 postgraduates. Results A total of 422 participants took part in the quantitative survey. Academic and specialty‐related domains were found to be the significant causes of stress amongst the five domains (p < .001). The top three stressful factors were as follows: getting an ideal case for clinical exams (68.2%), financial resources for conferences, dissertation, short studies and publications (53.2%) and fear of unemployment after graduation (52.3%). Based on qualitative interviews, four themes were derived, namely choice of paediatric dentistry, postgraduate life experience, stress management and expected changes in postgraduate life. Conclusion Psychological well‐being of the student is an important factor that influences the overall performance of students. Identifying the stress factors and using appropriate coping strategies can help postgraduates achieve personal, academic and professional success.

Background: Stress is a non-specific response of the body to any demand. Professional education has a certain level of stress inherent in it. Dental students have been reported in the literature to experience more stress than medical students. Objective: To evaluate the stress levels of dental students: first-year undergraduates, house surgeons, and final-year postgraduates, using salivary cortisol as a stress biomarker. Materials and Methods: Dental students above 18 years of age and without any systemic illness were included in the study. Those students with a drug history of corticosteroids, anti-depressants, and oral contraceptives were excluded from the study. Female participants experiencing pre-menstrual symptoms, pregnancy, and familial stressor issues were excluded from the study. First-year undergraduates, house surgeons, and final-year postgraduates were enrolled in the study. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected in the morning and evening between 9:00 and 10:00 am and between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Salivary cortisol levels were assessed by chemiluminescence immuno-assay (CLIA). Results: Paired sample t-test was used to compare the diurnal variation among morning and afternoon samples within the groups. The salivary cortisol levels were found to be significant within the groups. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the salivary cortisol levels between the groups. The salivary cortisol levels within the groups were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Salivary cortisol is a non-invasive biomarker of stress. Postgraduates had higher salivary cortisol levels than other study groups.
