Empathy is an attribute of importance between the nursing professional and the patient, where it influences the recovery of their health. Several studies carried out have shown worrying results where they reflect a great decrease in empathy during the formative academic years. The objective of the study is to determine empathy in nursing interns from three university institutions in Lima, 2019. The study is a quantitative approach, with a nonexperimental, prospective, descriptive and cross-sectional design. The application of the Jefferson Medical Empathic Scale instrument for students in Spanish version S is proposed, where the data was entered into a matrix in the Microsoft Excel 2013 program, then the IBM SPSS Statistics version 24.0 is subsequently analyzed obtaining the percentage of empathy of the internal, also take actions to improve these variables. 216 nursing interns from three universities in Lima participated. 51.4% are from Universidad Norbert Wiener, 89.4% (n = 193) were women, 56.4% (n = 123) are from the ninth cycle, 42.4% (n = 91) they study and work, 58 nursing interns from Universidad Norbert Wiener representing 52.3% have a medium level, 34 nursing interns from the Universidad de Ciencias y Humanidades, representing 30.6% have a medium level and finally 19 nursing interns from the Universidad Privada del Norte representing 17.1% have a medium level. Universidad Norbert Wiener obtained a higher score prevailing the medium level.

Following up on previous research demonstrating the high level of care realized by a paternalistic Mexican physician, the present research further explored the hypothesis that there are cultural differences in preferences for and experiences with physician paternalism vs. patient autonomy in White American culture as compared with Mexican culture. In this research, we interviewed sixty (60) people including twenty (20) Mexican, twenty (20) Mexican American, and twenty (20) White American respondents. We asked these patients about their experiences with and attitudes towards paternalism and patient autonomy in healthcare interactions. With some caveats, our data showed strong support for both hypotheses while also suggesting a high level of care can be realized by paternalistic physicians when “paternalism” is understood in a cultural context. We close with a brief consideration of the implications of these findings.

Objetivo. El objetivo del estudio es caracterizar psicométricamente los datos de empatía y sus dimensiones, así como determinar la distribución empática entre las áreas académicas en el proceso de formación de estudiantes de pregrado de enfermería. Métodos. Este es un estudio comparativo, no experimental y transversal. La muestra estudiada fue de 365 estudiantes de enfermería de ambos sexos pertenecientes a la Facultad de Enfermería de la Universidad Veracruzana, México. El total de la población fue de 425 estudiantes y la muestra constituyó el 85,88% del total de estudiantes (mayo a julio de 2022). Se estudiaron las propiedades psicométricas de la escala de Empatía para Profesionales de la Salud, versión estudiantes (fiabilidad, validez de constructo e invarianza del modelo). Para describir y comparar los grupos se utilizaron estadísticos descriptivos, análisis de varianza y gráficos de las medias con barras que representaban el intervalo de confianza al 95%. Resultados. La medida de empatía alcanza coeficientes de fiabilidad satisfactorios y presenta adecuados indicadores de validez de constructo, resultando una medida invariante según área académica y sexo. Se encontró la existencia de déficits en algunas de las dimensiones de empatía. Conclusión. El análisis psicométrico (modelo de dimensiones subyacentes e invarianza), previa a la estimación de los parámetros de la empatía, constituye una necesitad metodológica que garantiza teóricamente la estimación de los niveles de empatía y de la comparación entre grupos. La distribución de los niveles de empatía entre las áreas académicas se caracterizó por un déficit en las dimensiones cuidado con compasión y “caminar en los zapatos del paciente”
