Background: Diagnosis and surgical treatment of varieties of traumatic, pathologic, functional, and aesthetic disorders of stomatognathic system are included in the scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). Although this speciality plays a significant part in dentistry and medicine; dental and medical professionals still do not fully comprehend the exact depth. Objectives: To understand the level of knowledge amongst medical students of different levels, to promote the scope of OMFS among health care communities, and establish a fair understanding of the speciality’s contribution. Methods: This questionnaire based descriptive, cross-sectional survey was done on purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from 2022 October to 2022 December among medical students and interns of Nepal Medical College via questionnaire after receiving institutional ethical clearance. Data were entered, coded, and edited using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analysed using SPSS v.20. Descriptive statistics are presented in frequency, percentage, and mean. Results: A total of 254 study participants were included of which 149 (58.66%) were male and 105 (41.34%) were female. Of all, 99 (38.98%) were first year medical students, 80 (31.50%) were second year students, and 75 (29.53%) were interns. Mean knowledge score in preclinical students was 6.27 ± 1.73 and 7.12 ± 1.85 in interns. The result shows adequate knowledge for both groups. Conclusion: Findings of this study assesses the level of knowledge of medical students at a tertiary hospital which will help to highlight the need for awareness and education regarding OMFS, promoting its development, contribution, and impact among the health care professionals.

Introduction: Plastic surgery is a unique field‚ and its scope is beyond a specific demographic group or anatomic part. The poor understanding and misconception about plastic surgeons’ scope of practice has been well-established among the public, especially in Saudi Arabia; but the question is, do healthcare physicians share the same misconception? This study aims to answer this question. Methods: This study was conducted between September 11, 2021 and November 1, 2021. This is a cross-sectional, survey-based study utilizing a self-structured questionnaire targeting physicians in Saudi Arabia. Results: A total of 261 medical and surgical physicians participated in this study. Nearly 45% of them demonstrated a poor understanding of plastic surgery and its scope of practice, whereas only 16.1% were sufficiently knowledgeable. Male physicians were more likely to understand the field of plastic surgery when compared with female physicians. More than 80% of the physicians knew that cosmetic operations are done by plastic surgeons, whereas 50% or less knew that reconstructive operations are conducted by plastic surgeons. Conclusion: This study shows that 44.1% of the participating physicians demonstrate poor knowledge regarding plastic surgery as a field, in addition to a lack of understanding about the scope of practice of plastic surgeons. We recommend enhancing promotional efforts that raise awareness about the nature of plastic surgery as a specialty among healthcare physicians.

Purpose To explore the ability of Dental Students (DS), Medical Students (MS), Trainee Interns (TI) and Pre-vocational Junior Doctors (JD) in identifying procedures performed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS), the scope of practice (SOP) of OMS and ability to differentiate OMS from similar specialities. Methods The study included 282 complete responses to a survey consisting of: 9 demographic questions, 11 OMS awareness, professional ambition, teaching and exposure, confidence in identifying and referring questions and 70 procedural/scenario questions across four domains. Collected data was qualitatively and statistically analysed using SPSS V29. Results OMS awareness was limited. 92.2% reported None to Small amount of OMS teaching and exposure during university, with 66.0% preferring to have had a Fair to Significant amount. DS experienced more than medical respondents (2.1 vs. 1.5, p < 0.001). Most respondents reported No to Low confidence in identifying the SOP and procedures performed by OMS (67.7%) and referring to OMS (62.4%) compared to similar specialities (32.4% and 33.2%, respectively). 52.9% of procedures performed by OMS were correctly identified as being performed by OMS. The ability to identify the OMS SOP (8.7%) and differentiate OMS from similar specialities (5.0%) was low, however better among DS than medical respondents (14.9% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.002 and 12.2% vs. 2.2%, p < 0.001). Conclusion The study has highlighted a deficit in the understanding of OMS with potential implications in the public and private healthcare sector. Identification of procedures, OMS SOP and ability to differentiate OMS from similar specialities is limited however slightly better among DS.
