ObjectivePeriodic examination of the head and neck includes screening for oral cancer, which is largely performed in dental offices by vigilant oral healthcare providers. The aim of this study was to assess practice patterns among Virginia dentists in performing head and neck exams and the referral rates of biopsies after completion of head and neck exams. We hypothesized that not all dentists perform head and neck exams and there is a difference between dentists who refer patients for a biopsy and those that perform biopsies.MethodsGeneral dentists and dental specialists who are members of the Virginia Dental Association were invited to participate in a cross‐sectional survey study through REDCap to self‐report their head and neck exam protocols.ResultsA total of 224 providers completed the survey. The majority of respondents were general dentists with more than 20 years in practice, who practice in a private setting, and see more than 10 patients in a day. All respondents stated they perform intraoral examinations, but 10 respondents stated they do not perform extraoral examinations. Nearly a third of respondents reported doing their own biopsies.ConclusionsAlthough only 8.5% of oral healthcare providers in Virginia responded to our survey, respondents are following the 2017 ADA good practice statement by providing their patients with head and neck exams to screen for oral cancer. Additional education pertaining to extraoral anatomy, malignant transformation of oral potentially malignant disorders, and pathology procedures may be helpful to clinicians.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a speciality department of dentistry which deals with identification of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial regions and investigates the cause, processes and effect of these diseases. Books, internet, lectures have made great progress but there is still a gap between students’ understanding and interest in the subject. The aim of this study was to evaluate and analyse the challenges faced by undergraduate students in understanding oral pathology theory & practical and modify the teaching process accordingly. A descriptive cross-sectional study of 300 BDS third year students was conducted in our college. The results stated that 83% of the participants attended classes, 90% found the topics covered to be useful, 97% reported that the classes were taken to provide an in depth view of the subject, 71% faced difficulties in understanding the topics in theory classes. 46% attended seminars, 68% viewed more than 4 slides on an average in one practical class, and 80% faced difficulties in identifying the slide. Our data concluded, that if certain measures will be taken so as to engage the students’ interests, then this subject would prove to be a much better scope of learning for the budding dentists.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the degree of perception of oral pathology as a specialty among the general pathologists and the need of utilizing oral pathologists in assisting to identify oral lesions in diagnostic challenges. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among qualified general pathologists to collect the data. The survey items focused on various aspects, including the analysis of oral pathology as a specialty, the importance of employing oral pathologists for identifying oral lesions in diagnostic challenges, and the difficulties encountered in managing such lesions. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. For comparing the relationship between work experience and the referral of odontogenic cysts and tumors cases, a Chi-square test was employed. A significance level of p ⩽ 0.05 was deemed as statistically significant. Results: Two hundred and fifty general pathologists responded to the questionnaire. Two hundred and thirty two (92.8%) participants showed awareness of oral pathology as a specialty. For the diagnosis of oral, jaws, and salivary glands pathologic lesions, the majority 198 (79.2%) respondents believed that oral pathologists are required for the diagnosis. Regarding the referrals of lesions to oral pathologists, 137 (54.8%), participants did not refer. In terms of training in oral pathology, all of the participants agreed that they would undertake short-term posting in oral pathology. For challenging cases, all the general pathologists believed that oral pathologists should be part of the team. Conclusion: The general pathologists recognized oral pathology as a specialty and feel the need for an oral pathologist opinion in diagnosis. However, most of the general pathologists did not refer the complex cases to oral pathologists. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to encourage oral pathologists and their hiring at histopathology laboratories that are diagnosing complex head and neck cases.
