Perception of Affordance in Children and Adults While Crossing Road between Moving Vehicles

Abstract: Road crossing is a perceptual-motor skill and becomes critical when to cross as a pedestrian. In the present study, we investigated gap affordance perception and crossing behavior of pedestrians when they crossed the gap between two vehicles. Children and young adults attempted to cross inter-vehicle gap while walking on a treadmill in a virtual environment. Participants crossed gaps between two vehicles facing various gap characteristics. We manipulated vehicle size, vehicle speed and gap time between two veh… Show more

“…This suggests that adults preferred were better calibrated to the information and made decisions when the road was safe to cross, a strategy which was not present in the group of children. This finding is consistent with previous literature that examined age-related threshold points where children perceived the switch from an unsafe gap to a safe gap sooner than adults (Azam, Choi, & Chung, 2017).…”

“…Pedestrians make up a large portion of traffic accident fatalities, particularly in areas of high population density [1,2]. Exploring the behavioral dynamics of road crossing may provide insight into the fundamental source of accidents [2][3][4]. The task of crossing a road involves a goal-directed movement, as the pedestrian desires to reach the other side of the street subject to the avoidance condition due to passing vehicles.…”
