Agroforestry has many benefits, especially in improving the economy and food security. The purpose of this study was to analyze food availability and the level of community food security in Pahawang Island, Indonesia. The data were analyzed descriptively and based on the House hold food security access scale (HFSAS) on 9 variables. The results showed that the food provided from the agroforestry area consisted of vegetables, fruits, tubers and empon-empon while the food that could not be provided from the agroforestry area was rice, fish, tempeh, tofu, chicken, meat and others. etc. are obtained from the sale of agroforestry products. The revenue from this agroforestry product reaches Rp. 641,085, 000 per year or equivalent to 64,108.5 kilograms of rice per year. This means that for 14 days the community can survive if Pahawang Island experiences a disaster that causes people to be unable to leave the island. Based on the calculation results, the average food security score of Pahawang Island is included in the category of moderately food security with a score of 15.6. Agroforestry management in Pahawang Island needs to be maintained because it has proven to be able to improve community food security. The addition of commercial plant species also needs to be done, especially from the types of fruits and woody plants.

Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active and dangerous volcanoes, experienced a devastating eruption in 2010, causing numerous fatalities and widespread damage to homes and land, especially in areas vulnerable to the volcano’s activity. Despite the inherent risks, many farmers continue to cultivate the region’s land. This study examines the resilience of farmers in the Mount Merapi area in light of the persistent volcanic activity. Employing a qualitative methodology, including in-depth interviews and field observations, the research reveals that farmers’ resilience is shaped by their individual experiences and the contributions of government, private sector, and community actors. Long-term residence in the area has equipped farmers with the knowledge and confidence required to navigate the risks and hazards associated with the volcano. Farmers prioritize their safety but also focus on safeguarding their livestock and other essential resources, which are integral to their livelihoods. The local community is instrumental in supporting farmers and residents in disaster-prone zones, while external organizations offer additional advantages to farmers’ lives. The study proposes that a collaborative effort among all stakeholders is essential for maintaining farmers’ livelihoods in areas susceptible to volcanic activity.

Local communities generally play a crucial role during a disaster, so their involvement in pre-disaster capacity development may prove beneficial in the face of a disaster threat. Thus, People-Centered Disaster Risk Reduction (PCDRR) programs could enable communities living in disaster-prone areas to become more resilient. This study examines how relationships among individual attributes of the community (and their pre-event Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) context (risk knowledge, information access, and network and stakeholders) could give insight into how communities can be transformed to make them more resilient in the case of the Merapi Volcano community. Based on data collected through online survey platform by non-probability sampling, this study uses non-parametric goodness fit tests and parametric regression to assess the dependencies between various indicators and find the predictor variables. The findings indicate that the individual attributes of the Merapi Volcano community, as perceived through the pre-event DRR context has led to a better understanding of the function of people exposure to prepare more people-centered preparedness and disaster mitigation. However, since the sub-variables did not show any significance for being predictors, this implies that, even though there is a significant reliance between the pre-event DRR context and the individual attributes, the individual attribute could be regarded more as a modifier than a predictor.
