Perception of local and non-local vowels by adults and children in the South

Abstract: This study assessed the ability of Southern listeners to accommodate extensive talker variability in identifying vowels in their local Appalachian community in the context of sound change. Building on prior work, the current experiment targeted a subset of spectrally overlapping vowels in local and two non-local varieties to establish whether adult and child listeners will demonstrate the local dialect advantage. Listeners responded to isolated target words, which minimized the interaction of multiple linguist… Show more

“…While we stress the importance of vowel dynamics, we acknowledge that we work under the assumption that vowel-inherent spectral change is perceptually relevant and sociolinguistically meaningful. Some work has been done to support this assumption in the Southern US (e.g., Fridland & Kendall 2012;Farrington, Kendall & Fridland 2018;Gunter, Vaughn & Kendall 2020;Jacewicz & Fox 2020), though we leave such perceptual work on DASS for the future.…”

“…This perception study is important to do in order to see if there is a mismatch between production and perception in their realisations or if some speakers do not distinguish them at all. There have been a number of relevant studies that deal with these perception and production phenomena, for example Clopper and Dossey (2020), Gunter et al (2020), Jacewicz and Fox (2020) and Kirby and Misnadin (2019).…”
