Background: Breast milk is optimum for a neonate as it is a natural food and the best gift a mother can give to her baby. Breast feeding is an art and skill which need to be learnt and mastered by mothers. As health care workers are the first line of contact for lactating mothers, this study was planned to assess their knowledge on breast feeding. Methods: Hospital based cross-sectional study was performed among health care workers at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital of Mangalore. 100 health care workers consisting of 60 medical interns and 40 staff nurses were enrolled in the study. Health care workers were given a questionnaire that sought responses pertaining to the knowledge on breastfeeding and its techniques. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Access and Excel software. Results: The present study showed 92% of medical interns and 95% of nursing staff had correct knowledge about initiation of breastfeeding. Knowledge on contents of colostrums and its advantage was more among medical interns (85%) as compared to nursing staffs (30%). Knowledge on prelacteal feeds was good among medical interns as compared to nurses. Both medical interns and nursing have poor knowledge on breastfeeding during maternal illness. Knowledge on correct feeding position and good breast attachment was good among nursing staffs. Conclusions: Study showed there is some substantial knowledge gap on breastfeeding among health care workers. Enhancing their knowledge on breastfeeding and the problems associated with it will be useful for the nurturing mothers as well as themselves.

Background. The ratio of breasted children for more than six months increased from 33 to 40% in the period from 1991 to 2019 according to the Russian Federal State Statistics Service. This number has not changed in recent 12 years and remained on the level of 39-41%. Relatively low adherence to breastfeeding may be the consequence of the lack of training of future doctors in these issues.Objective. The aim of the study was to analyse the knowledge (and its dynamics over the past decade) of medical students, interns and residents on breastfeeding support and promotion in Russian Federation.Methods. We have conducted the survey among senior students, interns, and residents in 2009-2011 and 2018-2019. 8 medical universities participated in the study in 2009-2011, and 24 medical universities and one continuing education institute — in 2018-2019. Knowledge on breastfeeding support issues was estimated according to the results of future doctors’ responses to the proposed questionnaires.Results. Sample of 2009-2011 has included 1088 students, interns, and residents, sample of 2018-2019 — 3694. There is still high level of mistakes in the breastfeedng issues due to the decline in knowledge of the WHO breastfeeding recommendations. The level of understanding of practical aspects has not changed significantly over the 10 years, and there is still a gap between theoretical knowledge and practice.Conclusion. The necessity to improve quality of future doctors training in breastfeeding issues is shown.

Breastfeeding Intentions, Attitudes, and Knowledge Among Medical Students in Croatia

Background: Medical students should have adequate knowledge and positive attitudes toward breastfeeding to support breastfeeding dyads. No studies in Croatia have explored breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes or intentions among medical students. Research Aim: To investigate breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and intentions among medical students at the University of Split School of Medicine. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2023, using online and written questionnaires. All medical students without children were eligible to participate. The validated Breastfeeding Intentions, Attitudes, and Knowledge Questionnaire (BIAKQ) was used. Sociodemographic data were collected. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, t tests, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: A total of 357 medical students participated (response rate 64.1%). There was no significant difference between preclinical and clinical students. Students who attended the elective “Breastfeeding Medicine” demonstrated significantly more positive attitudes toward breastfeeding (Mean Rank = 215.62) than those who did not attend (Mean Rank = 173.58; U= 5468.50, p = 0.010); however, no significant difference was found in knowledge or intentions. Female students had significantly more positive attitudes compared to male students (Mean Rank = 189.47 vs. Mean Rank = 150.55, U = 9796.50, p = 0.001), whereas male students expressed significantly more positive intentions ( M = 36.97, SD = 5.26 vs. M = 34.44, SD = 5.86, t = −3.69, p = 0.002). The mean knowledge score was 11.92 ( SD = 1.43) out of 13 points. Negative attitudes towards breastfeeding beyond 1 year and breastfeeding in public were found. Conclusion: Despite adequate breastfeeding knowledge, some medical students demonstrated negative attitudes and intentions toward breastfeeding. Including breastfeeding education into core medical subjects focusing on the importance of breastfeeding for maternal and infant health and the risks of formula feeding could help improve attitudes, especially during the clinical years. It would also be important to address prevailing prejudices.
