Perception of stroke in Croatia – knowledge of stroke signs and risk factors amongst neurological outpatients

Abstract: The results of this study indicate that respondents showed a fair knowledge about stroke signs and risk factors for stroke. The results of our study will help to create and plan programmes for improvement of public health in Croatia.

“…This improved awareness could be due to an education program performed after the first study. The awareness of cardiac arrhythmia as a cause of stroke was rather poor in our patients (8.4%), though this is twice as high as the rate reported in 2000; this rate is lower than that reported in Croatian (39%) and Swedish (49.5%) studies [19,21]. The awareness of diabetes mellitus as a risk factor was moderate and also improved in comparison to 2000 (34.2 vs. 4.4%).…”

“…A smaller percentage knew that smoking and hypercholesterolemia are stroke risk factors (65.1 and 68.8%, respectively). This result was rather poor compared to nearly 90% of Swedish patients [19] but better than that reported from Croatia where smoking was identified as a risk factor for stroke by 58.9% of respondents [21]. The level of knowledge concerning hypertension and smoking in Poland was worse in a study performed in 2000 among nonstroke patients, where 27.9 and 6.1% recognized these risk factors, respectively [22].…”

“…Numerous studies using different methods (telephone interviews, face-to-face questioning, internet-based surveys, etc.) have confirmed low public awareness of stroke warning signs and stroke risk factors which contribute to late arrival and limited use of thrombolysis [9,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21]. A recent study of risk factor awareness among stroke survivors showed that older patients and those with excellent recovery are at risk for poor awareness even after stroke [22].…”

“…1 Life events and subsequent psychological stress are often regarded as being important causes of SAH (like in other illnesses) by patients, their families and sometimes, clinicians. 2,3 However, little evidence is available for the association between life events and SAH. 4,5 We aimed to determine the relationship between major adverse life events and the risk of SAH in a population-based casecontrol setting.…”
