Perceptions about the health condition of people with obesity

Abstract: Objective: to understand the perceptions of people with obesity on this health condition. Methods: qualitative research conducted in an outpatient clinic for follow-up of people with obesity. 15 people diagnosed with obesity were interviewed. “…Os resultados de uma investigação qualitativa, realizada com pessoas com obesidade que fazem acompanhamento ambulatorial, mostraram que a situação de estar obeso em busca do tratamento cirúrgico tem significado negativo e consequentemente gera sofrimento, medo, tristeza, rejeição, desconforto e diminuição da autoestima. Tais emoções impactam diretamente na vida desses indivíduos, tanto na dimensão física quanto psicossocial (Palmeira et al, 2016). As falas dos entrevistados deste estudo permitiram desvelar que a trama social da pessoa com obesidade possibilita interagir tanto com profissionais, que prescrevem medicamento e dietas, quanto com amigos e colegas de trabalho que aconselham caminhos alternativos como shakes, sopas e outros artifícios para emagrecer, consolidando, dessa forma, o processo de escolha dentre as inúmeras alternativas disponíveis no senso comum.…”
