Perceptions and Beliefs About the Role of Physical Activity and Nutrition on Brain Health in Older Adults

Abstract: Interventions and media campaigns may benefit from explicitly linking PA and dietary habits with brain health and helping older adults understand that cardiovascular risk factors are also dementia risk factors. Emphasizing the total diet (vs. specific nutrients) and providing clear messages regarding the frequency, duration, and intensity of recommended PA would also be useful.

“…Walking has consistently been identified as a preferred type of physical activity by older adults [27,28]. Efforts to increase older adults' use of parks may be most effective if focused on promoting walking [29]. Again, while there are likely benefits to engaging in sedentary activity in parks [12], those interested in promoting physical activity may consider finding ways to help adults gradually transition from sedentary activities to moderate activities such as walking while in the park.…”

“…The large multidomain trials [36,37] currently being conducted are a step in the right direction and will provide valuable information, finally tackling the incidence of dementia as the ultimate primary outcome. Until then, it might be beneficial for clinicians to share the optimism of many community members, patients, and their families, as reflected in recent qualitative research with focus groups discussing physical activity [38][39][40] and to carefully encourage a healthy lifestyle as part of successful MCI and AD management.…”

“…With increasing numbers of older adults living well into their nineties, the number of individuals expected to develop mild cognitive impairment Wilcox et al, 2009) along with having cancer will definitely increase (Courneya, 2003). Older cancer survivors may experience the detrimental effects of a cancer diagnosis in addition to age-related chronic diseases and physical limitations.…”
