“…Grix (2002) highlights how adopting a specific ontological position ('objectivism' vs. 'constructivism') and subsequent epistemological perspective ('positivism' vs. 'interpretivism') influences the methodology, methods and sources chosen in a research. In the present study, it has been assumed that policies and politics have an objective existence, without considering the subjective meaning perceived by different actors (Viollet et al 2016). Such subjective perceptions are likely to influence the engagement of the actors in the policy process, thus affecting its impact (Viollet et al 2020).…”

“…Since the emergence of the sustainability movement in the Olympic Games in the late 1980s and early 1990s, green games are increasingly prevalent (Ross, Leopkey & Mercado, 2018). Where a recycling programme is instituted in a sports event, the strategic partnership of experienced and committed stakeholders is necessary to ensure its success (McCullough et al, 2016;Ross et al, 2018;Viollet et al, 2016). The stakeholders, defined as 'any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organization's objectives' (Freeman, 1984, p. 46) play an important role because organizers and venue owners often lack the expertise to implement waste separation (McCullough et al, 2016).…”

“…In fact, hosting sports events, especially from a macro-perspective (e.g., the IOC's Summer/Winter Olympics, the UEFA European Football Championship, and the FIFA World Cup), has direct and indirect effects on the society, economy, and environment of the hosting regions and associated stakeholders. More sustainable sport events can be hosted when both the direct and indirect impacts on hosting region are thoroughly verified and forecasted [2,3]. However, it is not an easy task to precisely estimate the direct economic return for potential stakeholders of sport related events.…”

“…Sustainability is an important issue for all sporting events in the global sport industry [1,2]. Similar to establishing sustainable sport organizations, achieving sustainability in sports events requires effective management, political leadership, and ensuring that all stakeholders adhere to a sustainable philosophy [2,3].…”
