Perceptions of the Motivational Climate, Need Satisfaction, and Indices of Well- and Ill-Being among Hip Hop Dancers

Abstract: Grounded in the self-determination theoretical framework (SDT) formulated by Deci and Ryan, and specifically the basic needs mini-theory (BNT), this study examined the relationship between perceptions of the motivational climate manifested in hip hop environments, satisfaction of the three basic needs, and indicators of well- and ill-being among hip hop dancers. Fifty-nine hip hop dancers (mean age: 20.29 years) completed a questionnaire assessing the variables of interest in the study. Perceptions of a task-i… Show more

“…Empirically it has been confirmed that a mastery climate is a positive predictor of the fulfilment of the basic psychological needs in sport (Keegan, Spray, Harwood, & Lavallee, 2010). This has been shown with young soccer players (Ommundsen, Lemyre, Abrahamsen, & Roberts, 2010), elite dancers (Quested & Duda, 2009; Quested & Duda, 2010), elite orienteering athletes (Lundqvist & Raglin, 2015), swimmers (Monteiro, Pelletier, Moutaol, & Cid, 2018) handball players (Sarrazin et al, 2002) and young athletes (Ahmadi, Namazizadeh, & Mokhtari, 2012). In contrast, it has been found that performance climates can lead to lack of psychological needs satisfaction and drop‐out in a study of young female handball players (Sarrazin et al, 2002).…”

“…The few studies in sport that have investigated the extent to which basic psychological needs satisfaction mediate the relationship between the climate dimensions proposed by AGT and athletes' drop-out (Quested & Duda, 2009) or intentions to dropout, (Lundqvist & Raglin, 2015;Monteiro et al, 2018) have found support for the mediating role of needs. These studies have involved adolescent female handball players (age 13-15) (Quested & Duda, 2009), 16-17-year-old male and female elite handball players ( Lundqvist & Raglin, 2015) and 12-16-year-old male soccer players. As all these studies involve youth populations it is important to confirm whether the associations are also seen among adult sports participants.…”

“…3,7 Beyond epidemiological analyses, published information on medical or performance aspects of breakers is sparse. One study reported medical imaging in breakers 8 and small, preliminary studies on the physiology, 9 biomechanics, 10 well-being 11,12 and gene profiles 13 of hip-hop dancers have been published. In a cross-sectional observational study, Wyon et al 9 investigated the cardiorespiratory profiles and performance demands of nine male breakers and nine female new style dancers (a different style of hip-hop).…”
