Percutaneous CT-guided sternal biopsy: factors affecting the diagnostic yield

Abstract: Background Sternal lesions are occasionally seen in clinical practice and their diagnosis can be important, especially for oncologic patients. However, percutaneous computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of sternal lesions is rarely performed. Purpose To assess the diagnostic yield of percutaneous CT-guided sternal biopsies and to analyze the factors that affect diagnostic yield. Material and Methods A retrospective review of 34 patients who underwent CT-guided sternal biopsy was carried out at a single instit… Show more

“… 19 , 20 CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy of pulmonary lesions has a diagnostic yield ranging from 59% to 96%. 21 23 However, the main limitation is complications, including pneumothorax (8.6–45.3%) and hemorrhage (2.9–54.5%). 24 Compared to CT-guided needle biopsy, no cases of pneumothorax or bleeding requiring intervention occurred in our cohort.…”

“…Sternal biopsies are also technically challenging, with a potential for puncture of the aortic arch, pleural space, and lungs. CT-guided percutaneous sternal biopsy has a relatively lower diagnostic yield [ 9 ]. Our case was diagnosed by CT guided true cut needle biopsy under GA and the diagnosis was finalized after tumor resection as GCT.…”

“…A series by Song et al including 34 sternal biopsies revealed a lower diagnostic rate (64.7%) compared to other skeletal sites. A relevant percentage of non-diagnosed cases (23.5%) were finally clinically diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis [36].…”
