Objectives: Expose basic concepts of the existing literature on induced hypothermia in newborns who evolved with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Methods: A narrative literature review was carried out based on 22 articles, from February to April 2023, prioritizing articles published in the last 5 years. The articles were taken from the Lilacs, Pubmed, Scielo, Embase and Scopus databases. Results: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) consists of a series of cellular and molecular alterations resulting from a severe anoxic brain injury that occurred in the neonatal period. Current research reveals that even the condition in its mild form is not benign. Therapeutic Hypothermia (TH) is the most effective technique indicated for the management of newborns (NB) admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who present neuropathies secondary to asphyxia, accompanied by clinical signs of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy. The therapy consists of exposing the newborn at term or late preterm to a temperature of 33.5º C from the first 6 hours of life and, over 72 hours of cooling, gradually rewarming the patient. Total body hypothermia, when compared with the control group to identify the outcome of neurological abnormalities, contributed to a 17% reduction. Concomitantly with these data, found at 18 months of age, there was also a 21% reduction in the risk of cerebral palsy and a 22% reduction in moderate or severe disability. Conclusion: It has been shown that induced hypothermia can be effective in reducing mortality and neurodevelopmental failures in these newborns.

The objective was to describe the infection profile of multidrug-resistant organisms of newborns (NB), admitted to the neonatal intermediate care unit and the intensive care unit. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study of epidemiological nature, composed of 931 medical records and/or Hospital Infection Control Committee notification records, during the period of June to September 2012. Eight hundred and seventy newborns (NB) were admitted to the neonatal intensive care units and to intermediate care, with a final sample of 45 NB presenting bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by multiresistant microorganisms. From the analyses, the following results were highlighted: gestational age < 37 weeks in 42 (93.3%); low weight at birth between < 750g to 1.499g. The profile for resistance to enterobacteriaceae was 100% for cefepime and ceftazidime concerning non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria, it was found that (100%) of P.aeruginosa was resistant to aztreonam, (100%) of S. maltophilia resistant to ceftazidime and to gentamycin, however, (1.1%) of S. aureus isolates were resistant to oxacillin and (12.5%) of S. haemolyticus demonstrated a confirmed resistance to vancomycin. These results are worrying and express the importance of correct monitoring, and the need for producing a propaedeutic protocol in consensus with the multiprofessional team through the Hospital Infection Control Committee and managers, which is then implemented and regularly assessed by the service.

Objective to analyze the learning demands of puerperal women and their families about postnatal newborn care based on their knowledge and practices. Method this is a qualitative research developed through the Dynamis of Concrete of the Sensitive Creative Method, with 19 puerperal women and families of low-risk newborns, in a municipal hospital in Rio das Ostras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from March to June 2019. Data were submitted to lexicographic analysis using the software IRaMuTeQ. Results different families’ knowledge and practices regarding postnatal newborn care were identified, in addition to different learning demands related to newborns’ body hygiene, including bathing and handling the umbilical stump, and nutrition, in relation to breastfeeding and use of artificial nipples. Conclusion health professionals, including nurses, need to develop dialogical educational practices based on families’ learning demands, from prenatal care, going through the discharge process in the maternity hospital, until post-discharge in primary care, aiming at promoting safe and quality care for newborns.
