Modern railway services are required to deliver good quality services to the passenger throughout the whole journey. These include improved performances, safety, and reduce delays. There is also the requirement for in‐train customer experience such as infotainment and access to reliable communication systems. The railway industry has employed different types and generations of communication systems in recent times. Signaling systems were used at the early stage of the railway services. Today, communication systems such as the second‐generation communication system, also known as the global system for mobile communications (GSM), the Third‐generation (3G) and the Fourth‐generation (4G) are utilized in the railway industry. In this paper, we present a brief history of railway communication systems, their features and applications. In addition, we discuss the technical challenges and potential solutions of in‐train communication systems and how data can be distributed on‐board and between the train coaches using state of the art and hybrid communication technologies.

Optical wireless communication systems have turned into a state-of-the-art technology because of their superior performance uniqueness and innumerable characteristics, as compared to radio frequency. One optical wireless communication application is Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication. Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication systems can be improved by using, for example, advanced modulation formats and adjusting the aperture diameters. We demonstrate an analysis based on the aperture diameter effect in the transmission of a single channel using a 40 Gb/s Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication system and three different modulation methods, specifically differential phase-shift keying with a duty ratio of 66% or 33% and duobinary. These three modulations were chosen among various modulation formats due to the advantages they provide, i.e., the differential phase-shift keying provides stronger robustness to fiber nonlinearity and duobinary provides higher chromatic dispersion tolerance to mitigate the system requirements for dispersion compensation. The results show the effect of different transmitter aperture diameters (from 2 to 20 cm) at a constant distance (200 km) in terms of the quality factor and minimum Bit Error Rate. We conclude there is a great loss in the small aperture diameter, even in the presence of the best modulation format; therefore, as the aperture diameter increases the Q-factor increases, but some of the increased rise is linear and some changes from linear to non-linear at a fixed Q-factor point equal to 5.63.

Chaos Based Enhanced RC5 Algorithm for Security and Integrity of Clinical Images in Remote Health Monitoring

The demand for remote health monitoring will significantly increase in the near future due to a decrease in the doctor/patient ratio as the world population grows. In remote health monitoring, one of the major goals is to send patient's data to clinical experts at geographically distant locations. In this scenario, the importance of implementing security on patients' clinical information increases, so that this could not be either changed or read by an unauthorized person. Rivest Cipher (RC5) algorithm is a secure and simple encryption algorithm. Due to its simplicity, fast encryption, and low memory requirements, it is considered as a suitable block cipher for resource constraint environments, such as body area networks (BAN), although it can be broken by various attacks due to poor diffusion. In this paper, we propose a chaotic-based key scheduling algorithm for the RC5 in which round keys are generated based on 2-D chaotic maps and used as a symmetric key during the encryption and decryption process. Cipher feedback mode is adapted to further increase the diffusion property of the cipher. This chaos-based key is very difficult to trace, and the cipher is extremely hard to break. A strict security analysis of the proposed cipher is performed against several attacks. The experimental results have shown that the impact of this approach is significantly better than the conventional security mechanisms in case of BAN when applied to critical clinical images.INDEX TERMS Remote health monitoring, encryption, clinical images, wireless body area networks (WBAN), RC5, 2D-chaotic map.
