Performance Analysis of Mobile Broadband Networks With 5G Trends and Beyond: Rural Areas Scope in Malaysia

Abstract: This paper presents a multidimensional performance analysis of existing Mobile Broadband (MBB), Third Generation (3G) and Fourth Generation (4G) networks, of rural morphology in Malaysia. The MBB performance analysis is carried out based on measurement data obtained through Drive Tests (DT) conducted in rural areas located in three Malaysian states: Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah. The measurement data pertains to the performance of three national Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in rural areas: Maxis, Celcom, and Di… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, and based on our observations with recommendations from professors, the average maximum movement speed for a car is suggested to be around 140 km/h in a study of this type. Moreover, based on the test drive study conducted in urban areas, on suburban highways, and rural areas [72,73] for a project we performed, the recommended movement speed for the car was 60 km/h to facilitate reliable measurements. Furthermore, we are currently working on different mobile speed scenarios that consider train speed and drones, which will be up to 500 km/h.…”

“…This section presents the research methodology used for collecting data and conducting this study, including the hardware and software employed, the tested geographical areas, the test processes, quality control aspects, MBB services and MNO networks of radio technologies. This methodology has been applied to various morphologies such as the rural areas of Malaysia, as presented in our previous works [26,54]. However, the morphology type and testing areas in this research are entirely different.…”

“…The performance of MBB networks has been extensively studied from various aspects and contexts throughout the literature [26][27][28][29][30][31]. Several measurements and data processing applications, software packages and platforms with various measurement data types have been used for distinct MBB performance metrics.…”

“…That entails the software and hardware employed, the test processes, the tested geographical areas, quality control characteristics, MBB services, and MNOs. As presented in our earlier works [25][26][27], the rural and urban areas of Malaysia have witnessed the implementation of this methodology. Nevertheless, the testing areas and the morphology type are totally different in this research.…”
