The crucial role of competent software architecture is essential in managing the challenging big data processing for both relational and nonrelational databases. Relational databases are designed to structure data and facilitate vertical scalability, while non-relational databases excel in handling vast volumes of unstructured data and are geared towards horizontal scalability. Choosing the right database paradigm is determined by the needs of the organization, yet selecting the best option can often be challenging. Large number of applications still use relational databases due to its benefits of reliability, flexibility, robustness, and scalability. However, with the rapid growth in web and mobile applications as well as huge amounts of complex unstructured data generated via online and offline platforms, nonrelational databases are compensating for the inefficiency of relational databases. Since data is the most important element in maintaining organizational growth, selecting the right nonrelational database for high performing applications from a plethora of possibilities is a challenging task. Existing studies are still at emergent stage to compare the performance of different popular nonrelational databases. This paper introduces a novel benchmarking approach for tailoring the comparative study of nonrelational databases. To illustrate our approach, we compare two leading non-relational databases, Aerospike and MongoDB, focusing on their average transaction times to evaluate the database performance. Our comprehensive analysis reveals the strengths of each database in read and write operations for single record and bulk record batch transactions.

Databases are an important part of today’s applications where large amounts of data need to be stored, processed, and accessed quickly. One of the important criteria when choosing to use a database technology is its data processing performance. In this paper, some methods for optimizing the database structure and queries were applied on two popular open-source database management systems: MySQL as a relational DBMS, and document-based MySQL as a non-relational DBMS. The main objective of this paper was to conduct a comparative analysis of the impact that the proposed optimization methods have on each specific DBMS when carrying out CRUD (CREATE, READ, UPDATE, DELETE) requests. To perform the analysis and performance evaluation of CRUD operations for different amounts of data, a case study testing architecture based on Java was developed and used to show how the databases’ proposed optimization methods can influence the performance of the application, and to highlight the differences in response time and complexity. The results obtained show the degree to which the proposed optimization methods contributed to the application’s performance improvement in the case of both databases; based on these, a detailed analysis and several conclusions are presented to support a decision for choosing a specific approach.

Today, databases are an integral part of most modern applications designed to store large amounts of data and to request from many users. To solve business problems in such conditions, databases are scaled, often horizontally on several physical servers using replication technology. At the same time, many business operations require the implementation of transactional compliance with ACID properties. For relational databases that traditionally support ACID transactions, horizontal scaling is not always effective due to the limitations of the relational model itself. Therefore, there is an applied problem of efficient implementation of ACID transactions for horizontally distributed databases. The subject matter of the study is the methods of implementing ACID transactions in distributed databases, created by replication technology. The goal of the work is to increase the efficiency of ACID transaction implementation for horizontally distributed databases. The work is devoted to solving the following tasks: analysis and selection of the most relevant methods of implementation of distributed ACID transactions; planning and experimental research of methods for implementing ACID transactions by using of NoSQL DBMS MongoDB and NewSQL DBMS VoltDB as an example; measurements of metrics of productivity of use of these methods and formation of the recommendation concerning their effective use. The following methods are used: system analysis; relational databases design; methods for evaluating database performance. The following results were obtained: experimental measurements of the execution time of typical distributed transactions for the subject area of e-commerce, as well as measurements of the number of resources required for their execution; revealed trends in the performance of such transactions, formed recommendations for the methods studied. The obtained results allowed to make functions of dependence of the considered metrics on loading parameters. Conclusions: the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of distributed ACID transactions using MongoDB and VoltDB were identified. Practical recommendations for the effective use of these systems for different types of applications, taking into account the resources consumed and the types of requests.
