Performance analysis of packet layer FEC codes and interleaving in FSO channels

Abstract: The combination of forward-error-correction (FEC) and interleaving can be used to improve free-space optical (FSO) communication systems. Recent research has optimized the codeword length and interleaving depth under the assumption of a fixed buffering size, however, how the buffering size influences the system performance remains unsolved. This paper models the system performance as a function of buffering size and FEC recovery threshold, which allows system designers to determine optimum parameters in consid… Show more

“…To further enhance the reliability and efficiency in communication systems, link-layer error-control methods, including redundancy and retransmission mechanisms, have been widely investigated in the context of FSO communications. A typical redundancy mechanism is the error correction code (ECC), which guarantees transmission reliability by adding some redundancies to the original message so that receivers can use them to recover the erroneous data [32]. In addition, ARQ is one of the well-known retransmission mechanisms, which facilitates the retransmission of erroneously received frames via feedback from the receiver to the transmitter [33], [34].…”

“…The higher the data rate and the longer the link distance, the greater the impact of atmospheric turbulence. In order to resist atmospheric turbulence, using radio frequency (RF) link to cooperate with FSO [2][3][4], relay assisted transmission such as using unmanned aerial vehicles as relays [5][6][7], using deep learning to train the decision threshold of signal [8], Forward Error Correction (FEC) combined with interleaving and spatial diversity have been investigated [9][10][11][12][13]. Regarding the issue of communication interruption probability, theoretical research has been conducted in refs.…”
