An increase in the price of branded feed has been a major problem for the poultry subsector of Nigerian agriculture, and brand switching for a cheap feed at the expense of quality is a common strategy used by egg-producing farmers. Using descriptive statistics, the Markov chain model and the logistic regression model, our study shows that almost 96% of the egg producers use branded feed while 43.1% switched feed brands because of the increase in the price of their preferred brands. Most farmers used Chikun (39.3%) and Top feed (23.2%) six months before data collection and during data collection, respectively. Our study found that approximately 37% of the feed sellers sold at least 10–50 bags per day. We revealed great inequality regarding market concentration: 50% of the feed sellers accounted for 89.5% of the total bags of feed sold per day. Hybrid had the highest customer loyalty. The study shows that Chikun gained 23.7% and 7.1% from Hybrid and Top feed, respectively, while Hybrid gained 36.0% and 35.7% from Chikun and Top feed (change in loyalty by egg producers), respectively. Membership of an association, distance to feed sellers, flock size and the average price of feed per bag were factors that influenced brand switching of poultry feed among egg producers. The study recommends that the government assists in subsidizing the price of critical ingredients (maize and soya bean) in feed production to prevent the price of eggs (the cheap source of protein) from becoming out of reach for most Nigerians.

Aim of study: Credit impact on profitability and marketing efficiency of sawn wood marketers was examined. Area of study: Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State. Material and methods: 120 respondents were obtained using multistage sampling technique and interviewed with structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and profitability model. Main results: Respondents were male (70.0%) with 50 years average age. Sizes of sawn wood sold varied (4"x12", 1"x12", 2"x3", 2"x2"). The 2"x4" (16.8%) and 2"x2" (14.8%) sawn wood were most sold. Purchase price (₦1306.5) and selling price (₦1503.3k) of 4"x12" was higher than other sawn wood sizes. Total cost, revenue, net profit, benefit cost ratio and market efficiency of sawn wood business were ₦456604.20, ₦845843.30, ₦389239.20, 2.17 and 85.7% respectively. Promoting local sourcing of raw materials for firms in Nigeria has become one of the critical areas of government policies. In achieving this, the government introduced a ban on the importation of grains/cereals, which are critical ingredients in feed production for the feed mill industry. Hence, this study examines the extent (share) of locally sourced feed ingredients and its implications on the performance of feed mills in Southwest, Nigeria. Primary data used for this study was analysed using descriptive statistics and fractional probit regression. Firm’s age, quantity of feed produced and location of the feed mills significantly determined the share of locally sourced feed ingredients in feed production of feed mills in the region while level of education of feed mill operators, firm’s age, quantity of feed produced and proportion of locally sourced feed ingredients had significant effect on the performance (profitability) of feed mill entreprises in the area. It was therefore recommended that policies on improving infrastructure, production of feed ingredients, and addressing insecurity should be prioritised rather than promoting a ban on the importation of critical feed ingredients for the feed mill industry in Nigeria.
