Performance and Economic Benefit of Herbicides Used for Broadleaf Weed Control in Peanut

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted over two growing seasons (1995 and 1996) and at two locations (Jay, FL, and Headland, AL) to identify the most effective herbi cide program for Florida beggarweed [Desmodium tortuosum (SW) D. C. ] control in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The most common herbicides used for Florida beg garweed control-including preemergence (PRE), earlypostemergence (EPOST), mid-postemergence(MPOST) andlate-postemergence (LPOST) applied treatmentswere evaluated in a factorial treatment arrangem… Show more

“…This is in agreement with Wehtje et al (2000) who showed reduced net returns from peanut production when chlorimuron was applied late-season and integrated into an overall weed management system. They attributed these results to weed control too late in the season to protect yields and subtle peanut injury from which there was incomplete recovery.…”

“…The non-AHAS imazapic-equivalent systems required two applications during the growing season, i.e., a PREapplied followed by the POST-applied treatment. This two-application requirement for adequate weed control has been demonstrated in previous research (Wehtje et al, 2000a).…”

“…This can limit imazapic POST weed activity resulting in variable Florida beggarweed control which was observed in these and other trials . Paraquat plus bentazon plus 2,4-DB Florida beggarweed control was 55% or less across all experiments and has been previously noted (Wehtje et al, 2000a;2000b).…”

“…Paraquat provides only early postemergence (EPOST) contact control (Grey et al, 2003), while chlorimuron provides contact and residual activity (Wehtje et al, 2000a). Peanut tolerance to paraquat was first noted in the late 1970s (Wehtje et al, 1986).…”
