Performance and emission characteristics of micro gas turbine engine fuelled with bioethanol-diesel-biodiesel blends

Abstract: Biodiesel is receiving increasing attention as an alternative fuel due to the ever-growing demand for energy. However, the inferior physiochemical properties of biodiesel render it incompatible for gas turbine application, which needs to meet the standard requirement of gas turbine fuel accordance to ASTM D2880. In this quest, the biodiesel-dieselbioethanol blends might be a good option. In this paper, the research work was carried out to study experimentally the performance and exhaust emission characteristic… Show more

“…Countries in other regions face severe crisis in bridging the gap between energy demand and fuel supply [2]. Fossil fuel combustion also results in air pollution, acid rain, and build-up of carbon dioxide, thus putting human beings and the environment at risk [3][4][5][6][7]. Among the alternatives to fossil fuels, biofuels such as biogas, alcohols, and biodiesels have received considerable attention due to their renewable nature and their inherent potential to bring down net CO2 emission [8][9][10][11].…”

“…However, this in turn makes ignition difficult in CI engines. A possible means of overcoming these drawbacks is to extract the CO2 content of biogas, thereby increasing the combustible fraction and making it a more viable alternative fuel [6,7,[23][24][25][26]. This purification process is known as methane enrichment.…”

“…Biodiesel can be produced from a variety of SVO feedstocks such as jatropha, karanja, rapeseed, soybean, palm, etc. [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Proper utilization of renewable SVOs as fuel, replacing fossil fuel, contributes to climate, water, and soil protection, helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and provide sustainability, regional development, and improvement in agriculture [2,8].…”

“…Furthermore, burning ethanol is cleaner than fossil fuels so as to reduce environmental pollution and greenhouse emissions. Currently, alcohol based fuel is found to be the main focus for internal combustion engine research [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Ethanol could be used as a blending fuel in gasoline and diesel engines [9][10][11].…”
