Performance and Emission Modelling and Simulation of Marine Diesel Engines using Publicly Available Engine Data

Abstract: To analyse the behaviour of marine diesel engines in unsteady states for different purposes, for example to determine the fuel consumption or emissions level, to adjust the control strategy, to manage the maintenance, etc., a goal-based mathematical model that can be easily implemented for simulation is necessary. Such a model usually requires a wide range of operating data, measured on a test stand. This is a time-consuming process with high costs and the relevant data are not available publicly for a selecte… Show more

“…The ecological parameters of marine power plants depend on many factors and can deteriorate during their operation. One effective way to control them is vibroacoustic diagnostics and monitoring of the working process of diesel engines [17,18,19,20]. However, this method requires the installation of additional equipment on the main and auxiliary engines of the power plant.…”

“…The details of the mean-value zero-dimensional mathematical model of the diesel engine are presented in [39], and a summary of the model is presented here. The model is divided into the following parts: turbine, compressor, turbocharger shaft, charge air cooler, intake air receiver, exhaust gas receiver and cylinders.…”

“…The second and third modules are described in [37]. The fourth module has been adapted so that the steady-state model applied in [36] is replaced by the meanvalue zero-dimensional (MVZD) model described in [38]. The fifth module is elaborated to determine the overall system outputs, which integrates the outputs of modules 2, 3, and 4 by including their interrelations.…”

“…A submodule for the NOx evaluation is developed and integrated under module 5, where the NOx formation model is evaluated based on the mathematical model presented in detail by Heywood [39]. The developed mathematical model enables determining the average NO emission directly, where NO 2 emission can be estimated roughly as 10% of the calculated NO emission [38]. The coupled system of equations representing the described mathematical model is shown in Table 1.…”
