Performance and geometry optimization of the ceramic‐based rectilinear ion traps

Abstract: The ceramic-based rectilinear ion trap (cRIT) can be a qualified linear ion trap mass analyzer with high ion storage capability, excellent mass resolution, and high tandem mass analysis efficiency. It can be easily manufactured and operated, and has great potential in ion trap mass spectrometry.

“…163 Chaudhary and coworkers constructed a miniature cylindrical ion trap by punching donut shapes from a sheet of low-temperature co-fired ceramic, laminating the sheets, firing the structure, plating the surface with Ni for adhesion and Au for conductivity via sputtering or evaporation, and finally photolithographically etching the appropriate electrode pattern. Other traps, including those with planar resistive electrodes, 164 a halo ion trap, 120 a rectilinear ion trap, 165 and, most recently, a linear ion trap array with six mass analyzers 144 have been built using metal-coated ceramic materials.…”

“…The x and y electrodes were machined via the newest ceramic gold-plating technology. [34][35][36][37] Each electrode was 40 and 5 mm in length and width, respectively. A side electrode and a central electrode with a slit (32 mm × 0.7 mm) were located at the center of the x and y electrodes and used as adjustable electrodes.…”

“…As previously reported, 38,41,42 tandem mass spectrometry experiments involve several stages including ion injection, ion cooling, ion isolation, collision-induced dissociation, and mass analysis. Ion excitation in both x-and y-directions was performed by turning on the CD4066 switch with a DC voltage of 9 V in the stage of collision-induced dissociation.…”
