Performance and Mechanism of Asphalt Modified by Buton-Rock Asphalt and Different Types of Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber

Abstract: In this paper, two types of Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber (SBR) were adopted to modify the Buton-rock asphalt (BRA) modified asphalt, aiming to select a binder with excellent comprehensive performances. Powder SBR and latex SBR (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%), were mixed with the 15 w% BRA modified asphalt. The characterization of rheological properties included dynamic shear rheometer, rotational viscometer, and bending beam rheometer test. The short-term aging performance was characterized by the ratio of the complex sh… Show more

“…A SEM was used to observe the micro-morphology of CEBM cured for 24 h. The 1500×, 3000×, 5000×, and 8000× magnified figures of the sample are shown in Figure 6 . The hydration products of cement mainly include acicular and reticulated hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H), flaky calcium hydroxide (C-H), and columnar ettringite (C-A-S-H) [ 43 , 44 ]. In Figure 7 a,b, there are many micropores in the CEBM, which are the air voids where water evaporates from the demulsification of emulsified bitumen.…”

“…However, it still satisfies the requirement of the Marshall stability of HMA (≥8 kN). The hydration of cement makes use of the free water produced by the demulsification of emulsified bitumen, which accelerates the demulsification of bitumen [16,44]. Emulsified bitumen residues and cement hydration products are the composite binders of the CEBM, which explains why the strength of the mixture increases gradually with the increase of the cement content.…”

“…However, few studies focused on the applicability of LR materials in road engineering. Fortunately, some researchers successfully employed liquid styrene‐butadiene rubber (LSBR) in road‐pavement systems owing to its desirable plasticity at a low content level 16,17 . Unlike other LRs, the use of LSBRs served as asphalt modifiers have been investigated previously, and remarkable findings have been obtained, which can be used as references for extending the CR‐modified asphalt system.…”

“…Currently, the crushing of waste tires into rubber powder as a pavement material is a widely accepted treatment technique. Rubber-powder modified cement-based concrete [6,7], asphalt-based concrete [8,9], and polymer concrete [10] have been extensively researched and applied. Epoxy resin concrete is a type of polymer concrete that exhibits excellent characteristics, such as high strength, short curing time, improved durability, and freezing-thawing resistance [11,12].…”
