Performance Assessment of a Commercial Continuous-Wave Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Tissue Oximeter for Suitability for Use in an International, Multi-Center Clinical Trial

Abstract: Despite the wide range of clinical and research applications, the reliability of the absolute oxygenation measurements of continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy sensors is often questioned, partially due to issues of standardization. In this study, we have compared the performances of 13 units of a continuous wave near-infrared spectroscopy device (PortaMon, Artinis Medical Systems, NL) to test their suitability for being used in the HEMOCOVID-19 clinical trial in 10 medical centers around the world. Detai… Show more

“…Nevertheless, it is important to notice that single measurements variability was on average approximately 0.7% (%CV). This observation was slightly lower compared to previous studies [24], and again emphasizes the accuracy of the sensor regarding the variability of the hemodynamics of the human tissue. In conclusion, it was found that intra-sensor variability was slightly higher in phantoms compared with in vivo measurements, and reproducibility on different days is as expected higher in vivo measurements.…”

“…These results suggest as well that the Train.Red Fyer sensor can be stable for a long period of time, under different conditions, not variating significantly when conducted by different operators. We did not observe the presence of a period of warmup as Cortese et al [24] experienced. The CV obtained in this study is comparable to what was reported in the literature [24] even if the recording period is different, i.e.,3hrs in our study VS 7hrs in the existing study; although they excluded the first 1hr for the warm-up period.…”

“…NIRS provides non-invasive and non-ionizing technology that has been used to measure variations in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin concentrations in various human tissues [32][33][34]. It has been shown that NIRS provides consistent readings with other measurement modalities in various applications, including cerebral blood flow [35] and skeletal muscle contractions [36].…”
